About the Romanian language

Romania has a population of around 22 million inhabitants and around 19 million of these have Romanian as their native language. As well as in Romania, the language is also spoken by the majority of the inhabitants in Moldova and by minority groups in the neighbouring countries Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary.

The second most common language in Romania is Italian and most Romanians can understand simple Italian very well. However, the opposite is not the case since the Romanian language has borrowed some Slavic words. Although both languages use the latin alphabet, Romanian uses a lot of special characters in order to indicate the phonemes stemming from the Slavic languages.
