The estonian language

Estonian became an official language of the European Union in 2004 when Estonia joined the EU. It is the native language of just over 1 million people. As a result of historical events in the 20th century, Estonian communities exist abroad as well where the language is spoken by an additional 150, 000 people.

Due to the historical development of Estonia, the Estonian language has many loan words and expressons from the Baltic, Germanic and Slavic languages. Unknown to many people, Estonian is closely related to the Finnish language and its grammar is based on that of the Hungarian language.
