About the swedish language

Today, with its 8.5 million native speakers Swedish is the most important language in Skandanavia and is understood by Danish speakers as well as Norwegian. Since the radical change in Eastern Europe between 1989 and 1991 Russia’s interest in the Swedish language has dramatically increased. So much so in fact, that today Swedish is offered as a subject in many schools. At present around 40,000 foreign students study the language.

The majority of the Swedish vocabulary is of German origin and the languge contains many German loan words as well as some Greek and Latin. There is a large degree of dialectal diversity all across Sweden with around 6 major dialects.
