The Pashto Language

Pashto is the native language of around 33 million Pashtuns living in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Pashtuns have always been considered the ruling class of Afghans, during the time of the monarchy as well as under the various Republican or Islamist regimes since 1973.

Persian and Arabic loan words are frequently used in Pashto; a result of the dominating role the Persian language played after the capital city of Afghanistan was changed from Kandahar to Kabul in the 18th century.
