A translation from English into Latvian (or vice versa) must not only be linguistically correct but also culturally. In this regard, mistakes in brochures or guides could lead to a loss of profit as well as a bad reputation for your business.

Unecessary and embarassing mistakes should be avoided when introducing your products and services onto the Latvian market. Therefore working with a translation company which can provide you with flawless and accurate translations is extremely worthwhile.

About the Latvian language

Latvian belongs to the Eastern group of Baltic languges within the Indoeuropean language family. The Latvian vocabulary contains many words which have been borrowed from German and Russian and more recently from English. When Latvia entered the European Union the translation of extensive pieces of legislation showed gaps in the Latvian vocabulary. The national translation office is examining and developing the coining of new words.

During the time that Latvia belonged to the Soviet Union, the Russian language took over and Latvian almost became a minority language. In 1991 drastic measures were taken to try to reverse this situation to some extent. In 2006, 70% of Latvian inhabitants spoke the language as their native language. 35% of the Latvian population are Russians, many of whom cannot speak or write Latvian.
